These reels are a little harder to use in that you don't have the push button release of a closed face reel you have a bail to work with. Don't fret though as even a novice fisherman can pick this up fairly quickly. Simply hold the line pressed between your index finger and the rod and rear back and throw. Be sure to let the line loose from your finger in your forward motion.

Probably one of the hardest and most frustrating types of reels for any fisherman to throw is a baitcaster. These reels also have a push button type of release but you have to keep your finger planted firmly on the spool when you press the release button and during your throwing motion again only releasing your finger when the rod is at the front-end of your cast. The reason they are the hardest and most frustrating to cast is because they have a tendency to backlash if not thrown properly. Backlash is simply when the line gets tangled all in the spool and becomes very hard to untangle. This is a fisherman's nightmare especially if you have been catching fish. That being said, they are probably also the most loved fishing reels of avid fisherman as when you do practice with it and get to where you are not backlashing the distance and smoothness you get from a cast is incomparable. Add in the fact that these reels can typically handle any duress that a fish can throw at it and you have a winning combination.

The ling or “eelpout” is without a doubt a disgusting, repulsive, annoying, slimy, smelly and unattractive fish in the sea. Despite these negative qualities, it has a delicious lobster-like taste and boasts its own annual festival near Walker, Minnesota. Why? The eelpout may be ugly, but its redeeming qualities far outweigh any appearance deficiencies.

Eelpout, also known as spineless catfish, lawyer or burbot, tend to reside mostly in the deeper waters of clean cold Northern lakes. Their appearance is part eel, part catfish, sporting one single chin whisker known as a barbel. Its physique is lean and mean with considerable strength, challenging anglers with an audacious game of hide-and-seek. Its primary draw for many anglers is the ease with which they are caught. During the winter months, eelpout relocate into water 25 to 50 feet deep for spawning. As a result, anglers can expect to catch large numbers of these homely swimmers, often weighing in the double digits.

The most commonly used being the spin casting and the fly-casting. In spin casting the weight of the trap pulls the line out of the reel. In fly-casting the weight of the line is enough to carry the fly to the fish. You must learn to use the rod to cast the weight of the fly line.

The line and fly attached to it goes in the direction you point the rod tip during the cast. Good fly-casting is nothing to do about strength but it is all good timing which comes from practice. You have to spend at least 15 minutes a day to become a good caster in a month.

Proper stroking and correct stopping of the rod are fundamental to good fly casting. The caster loads all energy into the rod during the casting stroke. The rod then releases this energy into the line in the cast. The caster puts a short, low-energy stroke, into the top of the rod for short casts; while he loads a short, powerful stroke, into the middle and bottom of the rod for a long cast.

Casting arc is the arc the rod makes in the air during the cast, which is small for short casts and large for long casts. Precisely stopping the rod after the casting stroke is critical to forming the casting loop and it allows the rod to unload, thus casting the line.

Fly fishers never need to cast more than 50 feet when fishing. Still becoming proficient at long-distance casting can improve all your casting. You should first learn to cast short distance i.e.30 feet and then practice at greater and greater distances.

I know, I know, the best time to be fishing is "anytime we can", but are there times during the day, week, and/or month that are better than others for fishing? There most certainly are, and in this article I'm going to discuss what makes this the case. Many anglers catch many less fish than they should simply because they are fishing at the wrong time.

The best time to be fishing has a lot to do with two factors of Mother Nature. That's right Mother Nature, rather than your bait or lures choice, holds the key to the best time to be fishing. Most anglers don't realize this and completely take Mother Nature for granted, at least as far as fishing is concerned. Well, not after reading this article. After reading this article, you'll be much more able to determine the best time to be fishing.

The two factors that have such a dramatic affect on fishing are the weather and moon. These two forces of Mother Nature have a huge affect on fish behavior, and the better you understand how, the more fish you will catch. Understanding how the weather and moon affect fishing hold the key to determining the best time to be fishing. How am I so sure of this fact? Because I've been using the weather and moon to my advantage when fishing for more than 20 years, and know how important these factors are.

For example, did you know that fish are much more active during certain phases of the moon? And when fish are active, that means that they are much more likely to bite your offering. One of those phases is the full moon. When there is a full moon, don't talk about how people act weird and such, get your butt out on the water and go fishing!

Largemouth bass are cover-oriented fish. They use structure - rocks, weeds, logs, grass, and ledges - to protect themselves from predators and to ambush food items that pass by. Largemouth/Spotted Bass are around brush and bluffs in pockets and coves. Flukes, Spinnerbaits, Tube baits, Finesse worms, Crankbaits are a good thing to be throwing on shale and rock banks 5-10 ft.

Summertime is an excellent time of year for using artificial lures because so many different baits can be effective. Summer water temperatures appear to be one variable that increases the lethality of the virus; almost all bass die offs documented in other states have occurred from June through September. Scientists do not know how the virus is transmitted or how it is activated into a disease, and no cure is currently known.

Smallmouth bass fishing is fun and exciting, in fact I think pound for pound smallmouth bass may just be the hardest fighting freshwater fish on the continent. Catching these fish with conventional spinning or casting gear is an experience in itself, though there is another way to fish for smallmouth bass that gets overlooked by most anglers. Smallmouth bass are fair on live baits. Walleye are fair on live bait. Smallmouth bass are good on root beer JDC curl tail grubs, 6" smoke/red tubes on ball jigheads, and Bleeding Shad Tiny Traps along main lake points and ledges in 5 - 15 feet. Crappie are fair to good on Curb's crappie jigs and live minnows around submerged brush piles along break lines.

Smallmouth bass can be good year round. Topwaters and crankbaits fished around rocky points and riprap can be very productive. Smallmouth bass tend to lurk in the cooler water of streams, especially below fast moving rapids, in holes, on the bottom and along steep banks and bluffs. Areas that are undercut by erosion are the perfect place to find bass because they provide good hiding spots, as are areas around large rocks and fallen logs.

Bait fish will be thick in these areas and the bass will be thick below. Baitfish are not at the peak of activity but they will be in good supply in the deeper water. The lake is really turning on this time of year and the fish should be biting well.

Anglers will also find catfish and white bass. Whitney Lake's winding, riverine waters are good for cruising and sailing. Anglers report that 50- to 100-fish days are not uncommon, and 2005 saw the lake record rise to a whopping 15.68 pounds. Anglers did well during the early evening hours from the bank and from boats. Best baits were extra-scented power baits, night crawlers, spinner/night-crawler combinations and crank baits.

Black basses are larger and longer-bodied than sunfishes and more predatory. The largemouth bass may grow to 32 in. Black bass are the most popular freshwater gamefish in the nation. And, Texas is one of the top states when it comes to producing trophy largemouths.

Fishing is one of the oldest activities known to man. Archaeologists have found ancient dumps of shell and bone, cave paintings depicting fishing and even hooks made from bone. There is even a theory that states we might be closer to the fish we try and catch than we think. The “Aquatic Ape Hypothesis” contends that human beings spent a time living by and catching their food from the shallows of lakes and oceans. The controversial theory contends years of living that helped us to look different from the apes and chimpanzees thought by some to be our ancestors because of this time evolving by water.

The ancient river Nile was an angler’s paradise. The Egyptians relied on fresh and dried fish as a staple in their diets, and the various methods they used have been well represented in many ancient representations from their lives. Although they had some tools like nets, baskets and even hooks and lines, the fish caught were often clubbed to death. Perch, catfish and eels were among the most important catches in the Egyptian times.

The other bed of civilization, Greece, did not share Egypt’s love of fishing. Still, there is a depiction on a wine cup from 500 BC that shows a boy kneeling over a stream with a live capture net in the water below him. It’s unclear why the boy was ‘fishing’ however, since the device is clearly for live capture. There is also evidence the Romans fished with nets and tridents off the sides of boats. One of their most famous Gods, Neptune, is depicted usually with a fishing trident. There are references to fishing in the Bible, too.

Perhaps the most recognizable tool for fishing is the hook. No one knows for certain, but it’s quite probable prehistoric man was using some form of a hook over 40,000 years ago. Experts have had some problems pinning down exact dates since they know most of the materials used back then were most likely wood and not very durable. British Isle anglers catch fish with hooks made from the hawthorn bush, right up to the present day. Although Stone Age man had the tools necessary for making bone hooks, it is hard for scientists to get exact dates since bone does not define its age well. The oldest known hooks have turned up in Czechoslovakia, but others have turned up in Egypt and Palestine. The Palestinian hooks are believed to be over 9,000 years old, proving that fishing has been around for a very long time indeed.

Indians on Easter Island made their hooks from a gruesome material. Since human sacrifices were abundant in the area for some time, the natives made their fish hooks out of the most plentiful material around – human bone. Fish hooks made of human bone were the norm there until missionaries arrived at the turn of the last century. In addition to hooks made of stone, bone or wood, ancient man often combined material to make composite hooks with barbs that kept the bait on.

How to make fishing lures is one of those hobbies that is extremely fun to learn and very satisfying. There's no feeling that can describe catching your first bass or trout on a fishing lure that you made all by yourself. The problem is there isn't a lot of information out there in learning how to make fishing lures. Most people start off in the hobby through a lot of trial and error. I was no exception to this. Back when I was a boy I used to marvel at all the fishing and experience for a 12 year old boy, trying to carve out fishing lures out of your mom's lures in my tackle box and wonder at how fishing lures were made.

My first few early attempts at making fishing tackle didn't quite turn out. In fact the results were down right hilarious. Back then there wasn't hardly any information about how to make fishing lures at all, so everything had to be learned through experience broom sticks and painting them with your car modeling testor paints. I still remember running down to the water with my first fishing lure that I had made. It didn't wobble, I think the paint job only lasted a few minutes before starting to peel and hang off my lure like wet noodles. But it sure was a lot of fun.

Today learning how to make fishing tackle doesn't have to be like back when I was boy. Even though there isn't a ton of information available the art of making fishing lures has come a long way to helping the beginner.

The first step is having a basic knowledge of fishing tackle, design and function and knowing of what lure making supplies you really need. After that the fun can begin as you try your hand at making fishing lures. Here are a couple quick tips to help you out in making wooden fishing lures.

1. Most wooden lures in your tackle box are made of a few different types of wood. Balsa and Basswood are the most common woods used to make fishing lures. However you can make some really great fishing lures out of more common wood found in you local home improvement store. Cedar makes some great fishing lures and you can use both red and white cedar. I have had great success using both. They carve and shape fairly easily and due to the woods water resiliency finish up nicely.
2. Easy Ready to Go Painting Patterns. Did you know you can use your wife's or mothers used nylons to get some great patterns on your fishing lures without a lot of fuss. By using an airbrush you can take advantage of some of the patterns on used nylons to make some great subtle patterns on the sides of wooden fishing lures just make sure to use an old pair or you just may find yourself in the dog house if you use your wife's best Sunday nylons.
3. Always seal your wooden plugs before painting. This was something I didn't even know to do when I was a boy during my early fishing lure making attempts. It may sound like a small tip, but it goes a long way to making some nice fishing lures. Just use some wood sealer from your local home improvement store but here the crucial tip. After doing so sand down the fishing lure once more using very fine sandpaper, or even a brown paper bag. Wood sealers have a tendency to raise to raise the grain in wood, and this would result in an un-even paint job. It doesn't take a lot of time to do, but it helps to create a better looking fishing lure.

There's a lot more that can be shared about how to make fishing lures, and for most the best way to start learning is to jump in and start having some fun. I would suggest however to get the most from your fiest few tackle making attempts is to learn a little more about this fun hobby.
